Overview
The Hole is a heavy left reef break over live coral on the west side of tiny Saumang Island, tucked behind the southern tip of Pagai Selatan. It churns out lifetime-best barrels and brutal reef floggings in equal measure, and it only turns safe enough to surf under very specific conditions.
When It Works
The Hole draws swell from south to southwest (S-SW), with south swell the best match. It needs a genuinely southerly swell just to break into the spot at all. The wave is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind; the wave wants a northeast-through-east direction or no wind at all. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At high tide the take-off shifts to a shallower section further up the reef.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave with a long drop and serious consequences. The inside bowl is the real danger, where sets turn inside-out over the coral slab and swallow all but the best. If that sounds like more than you want to take on, Disco's off the tip of the next island to the west is the friendlier option.
