Thermopylae surf guide

Thermopylae is a surf spot known for its impressive left reef breaks. It's important to note that this spot really needs a decent swell to come around Mouille Point to set up properly. You’re looking at a powerful wave that can really get going on the shelf, leading to a speed wall at the first harbour breakwall. Be mindful that it usually halves in size unless you're lucky enough to catch a W-NW swell, which doesn't happen often.

This spot handles swell sizes from 3 ft. (about 1 meter) and above, but it's mainly for advanced surfers due to the powerful nature of the waves. The optimal swell direction is West, but it can also work with South and NorthWest swells. The waves break over a rocky ledge, and generally, you'll want to hit this place during high tide for the best results. With a left wave direction, it creates some exciting rides, but again, make sure you're experienced out here, especially when the surf gets larger.

Keep in mind that Thermopylae can get crowded when conditions are good, particularly in SW winds. The combination of the local crowd and the wave power makes it essential that only skilled surfers should be taking on the big days. So, if you're looking for a challenge on your board, Thermopylae could be the spot for you when the conditions align.
