The Wedge (Cape Peninsula) surf guide

The Wedge is located in the southern corner of the long beach leading to Cape Town Harbour and the container terminal. This spot is known for its unique wave formation, benefiting from the refraction of the swell around the nearby breakwalls. The waves here can create a sucky A-frame with short barrels, providing a fun ride for surfers who can handle it.

This surf spot works best with a north-west swell but can also handle south-west swells. The waves usually start to break at around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can go up from there. The surf breaks occur over uneven reef and sand, offering a mix of reef and beach break. Most of the waves break to the left, making it a good option for regular footers. It’s recommended to hit The Wedge during low, mid, or high tide, with a south-east wind being the most favorable for optimal conditions. This spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, as the waves can get tricky, especially with the wedging action.

The local vibe is pretty chill, but it’s worth noting that there are some local spongers who are protective of their spot. So, it's always good to respect the locals and follow any surf etiquette while you're out there. Overall, The Wedge offers an interesting surf experience, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
