Thorli Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Thorli Beach is a long crescent of black sand on Iceland's south coast, an isolated and beautiful spot that picks up consistent peaks whenever there's south in the swell. It can turn big, hollow and heavy, with swirling currents and plenty of duck-diving to get back out. In the western corner, beside the harbour wall, a more protected righthander sometimes forms.

When It Works

The beach breaks over sand and draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, and the peaks break both left and right. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your session for when a southerly swell lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest offshore wind. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

On smaller days the mellow peaks make it approachable for beginners, though the bigger, heavier sessions with strong currents are a different proposition. Expect a quiet lineup.

Access

From Reykjavík, take Highway One and, about 15 minutes out, turn right toward Thorlákshöfn, following that road for another 15-20 minutes. Just before reaching Thorlákshöfn, turn left toward Selfoss, drive 2-3 minutes, then turn right onto a dirt path that leads down to the beach. There's free parking.
