Tongo Reef is a multi-sectioned left that breaks over uneven reef. It starts steep and keeps running down the line with fast walls, sometimes turning hollower through the final section or shouldering off into the bay. The long rides are the real draw.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest swell the best match. It comes alive on south swells, when the sections connect into one fast, driving wall that suits goofies on their forehand. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows rather than surf on demand, though the quality of the rides makes the wait pay off.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks through the tides, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, best left to surfers comfortable on a fast, sectiony reef break. The lineup stays fairly quiet, with a relaxed local crew sharing the water.
Access
Reach Tongo Reef on a 10-minute walk around the coast from Cañon, or take a short boat ride if the military won't let you through on foot. Parking nearby is restricted.
