Overview
Torquay - Fishos is a sand-covered reef tucked next to the boat launching ramp, just past the softer waves of Torquay Front Beach. It takes real size to switch on, but when it does, it offers a toned-down right that lets intermediates get out while bigger, stormier conditions are pushing through. The break sits in Torquay, Victoria's surfing capital, a genuine surf hub home to a thriving surf industry, the Surf Museum, and the Surf Coast Plaza.
When It Works
This is a right-hander that breaks over uneven reef and sand, and it needs a solid swell to come alive. It draws swell from southwest through southeast, with a south (S) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it's really the bigger end of that range, on the largest swells, when the reef starts to fire. Consistency is on the lower side, so it can be hit or miss, but the windows are there when everything lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind. The spot also picks up decent protection from south winds, which is part of what makes it a handy escape when the coast is getting blown around. It comes into range around mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Fishos suits intermediates, giving them a chance to paddle out and score a rideable right when the bigger, stormier swells make the more exposed breaks a handful. It's a rare enough event that a bit of a pack tends to gather when it does break, so expect a moderately busy lineup on the days it turns on.
Access
There's a car park with both free and paid parking on offer. Facilities include restrooms, showers, and a surf shop close by.
