Overview
Tuamoto Island is an excellent reef break that holds both lefts and rights over an uneven reef, reached only by a long paddle or a short boat ride. Long, hollow lefts peel along the southern reef at a section known as The Bowl, while shorter, more intense rights fire at Inside Island. It's a wave for expert surfers who are comfortable a long way from shore.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and is moderately consistent. A medium east-to-south swell lights up the hollow lefts at The Bowl, while more east in the swell, or a large northeast pulse, switches on the tighter rights at Inside Island.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. The reef works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. To see the peak-to-channel section at its best, aim for lower tides teamed with a north-northeast wind and a south swell.
Local Tips
This is expert-only territory, both for the power of the wave and the commitment to get out there. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
Getting out here takes effort: a long 1.2 km paddle from Sponge Bay, or a short boat ride if you can arrange one. To reach the launch, drive east from Gisborne town centre on Gladstone Road, onto Wainui Road and State Highway 35 towards Wainui, then head up the hill and turn right onto Sponge Bay Road, following it to the end at Sponge Bay beach. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking.
