Overview
Tuncurry is a sand-bottomed right-hander at the mouth of Wallis Lake, where the North Wall breakwall draws a crew whenever a beefy northeast swell starts running down it. The rights gyrate along the sandbar, and a left can pop up on the other side of the channel. Quality falls away quickly as you head north, so the bank right by the wall is the one worth setting up on.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), with a northeast (NE) swell the best match for those peeling rights. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's scope on both small and solid days. Conditions are moderately consistent, meaning it won't fire every day but comes good often enough to keep on your list.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind to groom it, and there's decent shelter from south winds as well. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Tuncurry suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup gets busy when it's on, so expect company on the better banks. Plenty of people paddle out from the lake side, but keep an eye out for the outgoing rip and incoming fin tips around the channel.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options. You'll also find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and camping nearby, plus a surf school and surf shop.
