Whale Bay (Raglan) Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Whale Bay is the third of Raglan's three left-hand points, a point break peeling over boulders. It carries a reputation as the lesser of the trio, but it can still pack a punch at smaller sizes when it breaks close to the rocks and sections along the headland to the east of the bay.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from southwest through northwest, with southwest the best match. It's a consistent point that lives up to its excellent billing, and it works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Smaller days have the most bite near the rocks; as the swell builds the wall loses steepness and rolls along, unless it swings more west-northwest and starts to barrel over the boulders.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast offshore wind. The point works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate-friendly wave, and it tends to be slightly less crowded, with fewer locals than Raglan's other two points, so intermediates get their chance. Expect a busy lineup when it's on. Watch for rocks that can pop up suddenly, and take care with the jump-off, which is tricky.

Access

There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, and restrooms on hand. A walkway at the end of Tohora Close leads past the houses and down to the beach. Parking fills up fast in summer.
