Overview
Xago is a west-facing beachbreak that pulls in more swell than almost anywhere nearby, staying surfable when most other spots have gone too small. Peaks break both left and right over sand, and the setting is genuinely scenic despite sitting close to the industrial city of Avilés, with surprisingly little pollution for the location.
When It Works
This is an ultra-consistent break that catches swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best direction. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Where the good peaks form depends on how the sandbars are lined up on the day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind. The beach is also sheltered from the summer northeast sea breezes, which keeps it cleaner on those days. It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Xago is best suited to expert surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, and the beach fills with beachgoers through the summer.
Access
Facilities are good, with showers and a lifeguard on the beach, plus free parking. Finding a space is usually easy enough apart from the busiest summer weekends.
