Zarautz Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Zarautz is one of Spain's most popular surf beaches, a long stretch of sand with quality peaks scattered along its length, offering both lefts and rights. It's a very consistent beachbreak that doesn't need much swell to get going, and most of the peaks are performance-oriented. Water quality is average, with mild pollution from residential and stormwater runoff, especially after heavy rain.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from west through north, with northwest (NW) swell the best match — straight west swells struggle to get in here. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly waist high to overhead, and even the smallest swells will produce rideable peaks. Autumn and winter are the prime seasons, running from September through February. Once the size picks up, the paddle out can get heavy.

Wind and Tide

Look for south (S) wind blowing offshore. The banks work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Expect a packed lineup — Zarautz is hugely popular, the main peaks are almost always crowded, and the local crew is highly competitive with a very high standard of surfing. That said, the waves suit everything from shortboards, fish, and funboards to longboards and bodyboards, and beginners can get started here too. With plenty of surf schools operating on the beach, keep an eye out for learners and loose boards in the water.

Access

There's roadside parking, but finding a space in summer and at weekends can be almost impossible — the beach is also popular with beachgoers in the warmer months. Facilities are good: restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop, with more surf shops in the nearby town centre.
