Surfing in Egypt

Surfing in Egypt centers on the country's Mediterranean north coast, where a compact scene of beach breaks catches northwest and westerly swell across a short stretch of shoreline. The waves here are small and approachable rather than heavy, and the setup rewards surfers who learn to read swell, wind, tide, and season together rather than chasing any single spot.

Two areas hold most of the public breaks. Alexandria is the larger of them, a city coastline lined mainly with sandy beach breaks and a few boulder-bottomed corners. Spots like Cleopatra Beach at Izbat al Muntazah, El Agamy at El Agami El Bitash, and El Farasa at Al Mamoura sit close to town, which makes them easy to reach and easy to check. Further west, the Matrouh area mixes beach breaks with a couple of points and more uneven reef underfoot. Agiba Beach and Agiba Cove near Zawiyat Umm ar Rakham, along with Cleopatra Beach at Matruh, give the region a slightly different character from the city breaks of Alexandria.

Across both areas the pattern is steady. Northwest, west, and west-northwest swell does most of the work, with a northerly component adding size when it lines up. Winds tend to come from the south and southeast, which often groom the north-facing coast into cleaner conditions. Most spots work through the full tide range, so tide is less of a gatekeeper here than wind and swell direction. Expect modest wave heights for much of the year, with the bigger, more organized days arriving when Mediterranean low pressure pushes stronger swell toward the coast.

For visiting surfers, the appeal is accessibility. Roughly half the breaks suit beginners and half sit in intermediate territory, and the sandy bottoms make the learning curve friendlier. A versatile board that floats through smaller, softer waves will cover most sessions, with a step toward something more performance-oriented on the rare larger days. Check the forecast, match it to the orientation of each break, and Egypt's north coast offers a low-key but genuine place to surf.
