Surfing in Eastern Samar

Eastern Samar sits on the Pacific-facing edge of the eastern Philippines, and its surf comes almost entirely from swell arriving out of the north through east. That exposure gives the region a clear window when groundswell and northeast monsoon energy line up, with the northeast monsoon months from roughly October to March tending to send the most swell.

The coastline here is mostly forgiving. Three of the four breaks are beachbreaks over sand or coral, with a single reef adding a step up for surfers who want it. That mix keeps the region approachable. Two spots suit beginners and two lean intermediate, so a mixed-ability group can usually find something to paddle into. Waves start working on small swell, from around 1 ft at the beachbreaks, and hold their shape up into the 5 to 8 ft range on the bigger days.

Wind is the main thing to track. Most spots want a southwest offshore, while the reef prefers northwest, so mornings before the sea breeze fills in tend to be cleanest. Tides are flexible. The spots work through high and mid tide, and a couple stay rideable at low, which widens your options across a session.

Surf spots in Eastern Samar are spread across a handful of small coastal towns rather than a single hub. Barahon, Llorente, Nabiyawan, and Songco each anchor a break, so it is worth moving between them to match the swell and wind of the day. Notable spots include Boulevard, Lalawigan Beach, and Llorente, which give a good sense of the region's range from mellow beach peaks to sharper reef.

For planning a trip, think of Eastern Samar as a swell-dependent stretch that rewards patience. Check for north-to-northeast swell, look for light offshore wind early, and be ready to hop between towns. When those pieces align, the coast offers approachable, beginner-friendly waves with enough size on tap to keep intermediates interested.
