Surfing in La Union

La Union sits on the west-facing coast of northern Luzon and has grown into the Philippines' most popular mainland surf region, anchored by forgiving beach breaks and a handful of sharper reefs. Most of the surf clusters around San Juan and the neighbouring towns, with Urbistondo holding the densest concentration of breaks and others spread through Bauang, Baccuit, Darigayos, and Poro.

The setup is easy to read once you know what feeds it. Spots here draw from a broad northern-to-western swell window, catching everything from north and northwest through the western directions, so both groundswell and monsoon windswell find their way in. A southeast wind blows offshore across this coast and cleans up the faces on the right days. Tide is rarely a dealbreaker, since the breaks work through low, mid, and high water, which makes timing a session more about swell and wind than the clock.

Size expectations are modest but dependable. The sand-bottomed beach breaks come alive from around a foot and stay manageable up to roughly six feet, while the reefs prefer a touch more push, wanting about two feet and holding into the eight-foot range. That split shapes who surfs where. Beginners have the better of it, with several soft, sandy beach breaks that are easy to paddle around and forgiving on the fall. The reefs, breaking over dead and uneven coral, ask for more experience and suit intermediates chasing more shape and power.

For orientation, the surf spots in La Union range from the busy beach breaks near San Juan to quieter reefs further along the coast. Notable spots include Bauang, Car-rille, and Darigayos, which give a sense of the spread from town-front sand to outlying reef. Newer surfers should lean toward the beach breaks, while stronger surfers can seek out the reefs once the swell has enough size to turn them on.

Seasonally, La Union comes into form during the northeast monsoon, roughly October through March, when swell and cleaner mornings line up most often. Outside those months the coast goes quieter and can drop flat for stretches, so it rewards patience and a close eye on the forecast. Check the swell direction and size against the wind before committing, and you will usually find a spot along this coast that fits your level.
