Surfing in Tunisia

Tunisia is a Mediterranean surf destination on the north coast of Africa, where the shoreline faces mainly north and picks up swell arriving from the north through northwest. Most breaks come alive on north, northeast, and northwest swells, and because this is the Mediterranean the waves rely on wind-driven storm swell rather than long-range groundswell, which makes the cooler, stormier months the more dependable time to find surf.

The surf spreads across several areas with genuine variety. Bizerte, on the far north coast, leans toward reef breaks over boulder bottoms and holds the widest range of ability, from gentle beginner waves to at least one break for experienced surfers; La Corniche and La Grotte near Dar el Koudia are among its known spots. Around Jendouba, the Tabarka area mixes beaches and points over sand and uneven reef, with breaks like Fort Genois and Amphitheatre. The Nabeul coast adds beach and point breaks around Hammamet and Korbous, including Medina and Cap Meduse, and can pick up more easterly swell angles than the rest of the country. Smaller pockets near Béja and Tunis hold a spot each and are best treated as local options rather than the main draw.

Beach breaks are the most common setup nationwide, backed by points and a scattering of reefs, so sand bottoms dominate with boulders and rock ledges mixed in. Winds from the south and southwest tend to groom the coast, and tides are forgiving, with spots working through low, mid, and high water. Most waves start to break from around 2 ft and top out near head high, though a few spots hold more size.

For anyone mapping out surf spots in Tunisia, this is approachable territory: the majority of breaks suit beginners and improvers, with fewer demanding waves for advanced surfers. A regular shortboard covers most days, and a groveller helps when it turns small and weak. As always, weigh swell direction, wind, tide, and season against each spot before committing to the drive.
