Overview
El Cañon is a left-hand reef break that peels right in front of the cannon it takes its name from. It breaks over an uneven reef close to a bouldered shore, and on its day it throws high, tight tuck-in sections between open walls before shouldering into the busy bay. A kilometre offshore, the Outer Reefs hold more lefts and rights depending on the swell angle, for anyone with a boat.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through north, with southwest the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, breaking close to the bouldered shore on small north pulses and holding its shape up to 8-10 ft when wrapping southwest swells fill in. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to catch it when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
El Cañon suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Getting in means a walk or a boat, and the approach runs through a military zone, so be ready to leave your passport at security. Parking is restricted, and it's worth watching the sets while you get in and out.
