El Paso is a serious big-wave reef and one of the proving grounds for the gun brigade in Gran Canaria. The peak breaks over uneven reef and sand and peels both left and right, offering long rides when it lights up.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. On a solid northwest swell you can expect fast, heavy barrel sections on both sides of the peak, and rides can run long. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft, and once it pushes past triple overhead it turns into a genuine tow-in wave.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert-only territory. It ranks among the biggest waves on the island and really suits guns over seven feet, so it is best left to surfers comfortable in large, powerful surf.
Access
There is free roadside parking nearby. Be aware that the water here is affected by several underwater outfall pipes, so it pays to weigh that up before paddling out.
