Overview
El Picacho is a hollow, powerful A-frame that breaks both left and right over an uneven reef and sand. It throws big barrels, and deep, clean water surrounds the shallow reef. This is a serious wave with a heavy impact zone.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from north to east, but it comes alive on east swell. It's a low-consistency spot that really needs overhead NE-E swell to break, so your best windows arrive when a solid groundswell lines up. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Bodyboarders are drawn to it when it's on.
Wind and Tide
Look for south offshore wind; calm or southerly conditions suit it best. The reef breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is experts only. Positioning is everything here, because the impact zone is heavy and being caught in the wrong spot when a set stands up is no place to be.
Access
It's a long paddle out to the peak. There's a car park with free parking.
