Overview
Laga is a picturesque beachbreak tucked into a pine forest, with impressive cliffs guarding its eastern side. On its day it serves up good to excellent waves, and when the sandbars line up it can even throw the occasional barrel. The spot is much nicer in winter, once the beachgoers from nearby Gernika have cleared out.
When It Works
A consistent beachbreak, Laga peels both left and right over sand. It draws swell from the northwest through north (NW-N), with northwest the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Because the waves break over shifting sandbars, the shape changes as the banks move around, so it pays to check what the sand is doing.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind. Laga can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, especially at weekends. Keep in mind there can be some pollution drifting in from the nearby Mundaka estuary.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, and finding a space is usually easy except at the peak of summer. Through the summer the beach also has showers, a lifeguard, and a bar.
