Overview
Maresias is widely rated as the best beachbreak in the São Paulo area, and possibly in all of Brazil. It's a picturesque beach that breaks over sand, throwing hollow, fast, top-to-bottom lefts and rights when it's on. That quality draws the region's finest surfers, including Gabriel Medina, who grew up here. Off the western headland, Canto do Moreira wedges heavily, while the eastern end of the beach runs smaller.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with southeast (SE) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and handles size easily as the swell builds. It's very consistent, though it can look like nothing special when small and junky.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the north (N). It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a very busy lineup. Local pros train here and competitions are often held, so the standard in the water is high. When it's small it's approachable for beginners, but as size builds this is no place for the unskilled. Paddle-outs at size are a gamble with no consistent channels, and the rips can get strong and swirling, pinning you in the impact zone.
Access
There's plenty of support onshore: restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. For parking, there's a car park with both free and paid options, plus roadside spaces.
