Mundaka Surf Forecast Guide

Mundaka is a legendary left-hand rivermouth wave on Spain's Basque coast, widely considered one of the best rivermouth waves in the world. A long triangular sandbank shapes the swell into a fast, top-to-bottom barrel, with rides of up to 150 to 200 meters when it lines up. The take-off pitches hard and steep straight into the tube, then opens into a long, fast wall before the final sections, which vary in quality depending on how the sandbar is sitting.

When It Works

Mundaka draws swell from west to north (W-N), and it's the stronger northwest (NW) swells that light up the sandbank best. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. The best conditions arrive in autumn and winter, roughly September through February, and it almost never works in summer. Good spells tend to be short-lived, often fading within a couple of days as the big swells drop, so the truly great days are limited each year. When a solid northwest pushes through, holding your position while paddling gets very difficult.

Wind and Tide

Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind to groom the wave. Mundaka works from low to about mid tide, with a rising tide the better call, since on an outgoing tide the rip becomes a serious problem. Keep an eye on the rip running along the cliff either way, though it doubles as a fast paddle back toward the peak.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave, best suited to a shortboard or a gun for the bigger days. Expect a very busy lineup when it's on, with the outer peak dominated by the pack, but even waves further down the bank can offer great barrels. The atmosphere in the water is friendly.

Access

Getting out is a straightforward paddle from the harbor. There's roadside parking and a car park in town, though spaces fill fast when the wave is on. You'll find camping and a surf shop nearby.
