Overview
Songak Mountain Point is a righthand point that hugs the cliffs beneath the impressive Mt. Songaksan. It breaks over an uneven reef, and this is heavy water for experts only. Other rocky peaks can be surfed closer to the pier where the ferry to Mara Island docks, and a long left peels down the other side of the mountain, though access there is difficult enough that it is hardly ever surfed.
When It Works
The right only comes to life on the rare typhoon swells, so patience is part of the deal here. It draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast swell the best match, and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is on the quiet side, but the windows are worth watching for when a typhoon lines up the right direction.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind on the right. The left on the far side of the mountain wants northeast wind instead. The point can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for experts. The combination of heavy water and an uneven reef leaves little room for error, so come with the experience to match. When it does break, expect a fairly quiet lineup.
