Waipaoa River Bar surf guide

Surf: On those rare big S swell or good NE swell days, carefully check the Waipaoa River Bar (aka Big River), a deceptive, long, sandy rivermouth sandbar with some powerful waves. Stay at least a month in the best period for a decent chance of scoring Pipe or the Big River with classic conditions. Directions: From Gisborne City Centre, near the clock tower on Gladstone Road, travel west, then turn south onto Stanley Road, and go all the way to the end, Midway Surf Life Saving Club, beside Watson Park. Turn right onto Centennial Marine Drive and head down to the end of the road, beside the river mouth.
