Waipaoa River Bar, also known as Big River, is a long, sandy rivermouth sandbar that can throw some powerful right-handers. It is a deceptive break, and when it lines up it ranks among the better waves in the area.
When It Works
It comes alive on those rare big south swells or good northeast days. The bar draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast the best match, and it all breaks over sand. Expect a working range from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Patience is part of the deal here: plan on spending at least a month in the prime window for a decent shot at scoring it with classic conditions.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. The bar works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
From Gisborne city centre near the clock tower on Gladstone Road, head west, then turn south onto Stanley Road and follow it to the end at Midway Surf Life Saving Club, beside Watson Park. Turn right onto Centennial Marine Drive and continue to the end of the road by the river mouth.
