Surfing in Anjouan

Anjouan is a volcanic island in the Comoros, set in the northern Mozambique Channel, where reef passes and a handful of beach and point setups trade off depending on which way the swell is running. Most of the surf here breaks over reef, with a scattering of boulder and sand bottoms, so the coastline rewards surfers who can read swell direction and tide before paddling out.

The clearest way to think about surfing in Anjouan is by swell window. The reef breaks come alive on swell out of the southern quadrant, roughly south through southwest, and hold their shape best with a northeast wind blowing across them. These are the more demanding waves on the island, tuned to intermediate and, in one case, expert surfers, and they tend to work best from mid to high tide. The beach and point setups face a different direction entirely, catching swell from the eastern quadrant, anywhere from northeast through southeast, and they prefer wind from the west or northwest. That split means there is often a rideable option somewhere on the coast depending on the day.

Waves start working from around 0.6 m (2 ft), so it does not take a big swell to get the reefs breaking, and the larger reef setups can handle size up to 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) when a solid pulse arrives. Most spots stay surfable across a broad tide range, so timing is more about matching swell and wind than chasing a narrow tide window.

The surf is spread across several small towns. Mboueladoungou has the densest cluster, with a couple of spots, while Dar Salam, Maoueni, and Nkozini each add a break to the mix. Notable spots include Dead Fisherman Right, Five Papas, and Goat Wash, names that hint at the raw, exploratory character of the place. Dead coral bottoms are common on the reefs, so booties and care over shallow sections make sense.

Anjouan suits confident intermediates most of all. The reef waves ask for wave-reading and comfortable paddling, and the coral bottom leaves little margin for error, so it is not a natural beginner zone. For surfers willing to travel for direction-sensitive waves, the island rewards patience: line up a southern swell with northeast wind for the reefs, or an eastern swell with west wind for the beach and point, and Anjouan delivers quality surf in a remote corner of the Indian Ocean.
