Surfing in Epirus

Epirus lines Greece's northwest coast, where a west-facing Ionian shoreline turns passing lows and local wind swell into rideable waves across a scatter of beach and reef breaks. Surfing in Epirus is a small-wave affair, so timing the swell matters more than chasing size.

Most of the surf here answers to swell from the west and southwest, with a useful run of south and northwest angles filling in the gaps. The cleanest conditions come on easterly wind, and northeast in particular grooms the faces at the majority of setups. Because the coast sits open to the west, you do not need much to get going: many spots break on around a foot of swell, while the reefier corners prefer closer to two feet and hold into the head-high range. Tides are forgiving, and most spots stay surfable through low, mid, and high water, which makes it easy to fit a session around the rest of the day.

The lineup splits fairly evenly between sand-bottom beach breaks and reef. The beaches are the gentler, beginner-friendly end of things, working on the smallest swells and offering forgiving takeoffs, while the reefs ask for a little more size and a bit more experience and reward intermediates with cleaner shape. A lone point and a river mouth round out the variety for anyone wanting to explore beyond the obvious.

Ammoudia makes a natural base, with a couple of beach setups plus the mirrored Amoudia Left and Amoudia Right on either side of the river mouth, both easy places to find your feet. Parga and Pournari each add a pair of spots, and Kastro is worth a look when the reef comes to life. Kanallakion and Loútsa fill out the map with quieter options.

For a first trip, the beaches around Ammoudia are the safest bet, especially on a small, clean west swell with a northeast breeze behind it. Intermediates chasing more punch should watch for the reefs to fire on slightly bigger west and southwest swells. Notable spots include Amoudia Left, Amoudia Right, and Kastro; beginner-friendly picks lean toward the Ammoudia beaches. There is no single standout wave in Epirus, but with a west-facing coast, forgiving tides, and easterly offshores, a well-timed swell opens up a genuine spread of options.
