Miyazaki Prefecture lines the southeast coast of Kyushu, facing the open Pacific, and that exposure to east and southeast swell makes it one of mainland Japan's most dependable regions for waves. Most breaks come alive on swell from the northeast through the east and southeast, so the coast catches energy across a broad easterly window, with a number of spots also working on more southerly pulses. The cleanest conditions usually arrive on an offshore northwest wind, and since the waves work through most of the tide, planning a session is more about swell and wind than timing a narrow window.
The surf spots in Miyazaki Prefecture cluster around a handful of towns, including Udo, Hinata, Uchiumi, and Aoshima. Reef breaks form the largest part of the coastline and tend to be the more demanding waves, breaking over uneven reef and usually wanting a bit more size, around waist-high and up, before they turn on. This is where the region's expert and intermediate surfers spend their time, and Okuragahama stands out among the notable spots along this stretch.
Beginners are better served by the beach breaks. They sit over sand, pick up smaller swell from around knee-high, and stay manageable in size, which makes them the friendliest option around. A forgiving option is Okuragahama, a good place for surfers still finding their feet. A couple of point setups and river mouths round out the coast, breaking over boulders and reef and rewarding stronger surfers when a larger swell fills in.
Swell needs vary from spot to spot. Many breaks want at least thigh- to waist-high surf to get going, while the reefs and points can handle much bigger days, holding well overhead when the swell is up. The beach breaks top out earlier and are best on small to moderate days. The most consistent surf tends to line up when a solid easterly swell meets that offshore northwest wind, so it is worth watching for that pairing.
Aoshima, with its small island and shrine just offshore, is the most recognisable surf town in the region and a natural base for a first visit. Other well-known breaks along the coast include Chokusen and Curren's. From Aoshima it is easy to work north and south and sample the mix of gentle beaches and sharper reefs that give this coast its range.
