Black River sits on the southwest coast of Mauritius, where Southern Ocean groundswell wraps into a string of coral reef breaks built for confident surfers. Every spot here breaks over reef with a live coral bottom, and the lineups run from solid intermediate walls to expert-only waves, so this is a stretch to reward experience rather than a place to learn.
The surf spots in Black River cluster around Rivière Noire and the small coastal settlements nearby, with a couple of breaks each near Labonte and Rivière Noire and single reefs around Albion, Baie du Cap, and Barachois. Notable spots include Le Morne Rights, the region's marquee reef, while breaks such as Baie de la Petite Rivière Noire, Black Rocks, and the reef off Club Med add variety. Le Morne anchors Mauritian surfing, home to the fast, hollow left the island is known for.
Swell here comes overwhelmingly from the southwest, with strong south and south-southwest components and useful energy from the west. Those are classic austral-winter angles: the Southern Ocean fires from roughly May through September, sending long-period lines up the island's western and southwestern flanks. A handful of reefs also pick up more northerly and westerly directions, so there is scope to move around as the swell shifts.
Wind favours the easterly quarter, mostly east and southeast, the prevailing trade flow that grooms these west-facing reefs into clean faces. Most spots want a bit of size to switch on, commonly around 0.9 m (3 ft) on the sets, and hold their shape up to roughly 3 m (10 ft), with a couple of heavier reefs taking well-overhead swell for expert surfers only.
Tide matters over coral, and the reefs here work best on high tide, with many also holding through mid tide and only a few handling lower water. Line up a rising to full tide on a southwest swell with a light east or southeast trade and you have the exact setup these reefs are built for. For most visitors the sweet spot is an intermediate reef on a moderate swell, leaving the bigger, shallower waves to those with the reef experience to match.
