Overview
La Cicer is the most popular surfing area in Gran Canaria, a city beachbreak with lefts and rights peeling over sand. Several peaks along the stretch, including El Piti Point, El Bufo and Los Muellitos, are rideable 365 days a year and suit every type of surfcraft. The surrounding neighborhood has transformed from a quiet, run-down corner of the city into a fast-developing beachfront, though the new avenue along the shore has taken a toll on the sandbanks.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from west through north to east (W-N-E), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and with rideable waves on offer year-round there is nearly always something to paddle out for.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) wind to clean up the peaks. La Cicer can work through the whole tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly beach, and the lineups reflect its popularity: expect crowded peaks with everyone from local pros to first-timers in the water. If you want a higher wave count, a dawn patrol is highly recommended. After rain, stormwater pipes empty dirty water straight into the line-up, so surfing is best avoided until it clears.
Access
The beach is well set up, with showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop on hand, plus paid parking. 3RJ Surf Shop and Surf School at Numancia st. 89 is the local address for gear and lessons.
