Surfing in Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra

Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra is a long, thinly surfed stretch of Atlantic coastline in southern Morocco, where steady North Atlantic swell meets mostly sand-bottom beach breaks alongside a couple of points and reefs. The coast runs down past Laâyoune and Tarfaya toward Cabo Bojador, giving surfers a mix of open beaches and a few more defined setups to work with as the swell shifts.

Most of the surf spots in Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra face into swell arriving from the north through the west, so groundswell tracking down the Atlantic tends to light up the coast reliably. A handful of spots also pick up southwest energy, which widens the window on bigger, more westerly systems. Beach breaks over sand dominate, with the odd point and reef adding shape where rock ledges and uneven reef come into play.

Wind is the usual deciding factor. Clean conditions come on easterly winds, most often from the southeast, when the breeze blows off the land and grooms the faces before it swings onshore later in the day. Early starts pay off here. The tide is forgiving, with most spots staying rideable across most of the tide, so timing revolves more around swell and wind than the tide chart.

On size, the coast wants a bit of push to get going. Many spots need around waist-to-chest-high swell before they show their best, though a few break on smaller days and suit lighter sessions. When bigger North Atlantic swells fill in, several spots hold well into head-high and overhead range, so there is scope for stronger surf when the charts line up.

This is mostly intermediate territory, rewarding surfers comfortable reading open beach breaks and picking their own peaks. There are a few beginner-friendly options mixed in, but newer surfers will want calmer, smaller days and should keep an eye on the size. Laâyoune holds the biggest concentration of spots, with more scattered around Tarfaya and Cabo Bojador. Notable spots include Al Marsa, Boujdour, and Casamar. With long, uncrowded beaches and dependable Atlantic exposure, the region rewards surfers willing to explore and time their sessions to the swell and the morning offshores.
