Surfing in Gironde

Gironde is France's northern Atlantic surf coast, a long run of exposed sand-bottom beach breaks that pick up swell straight off the open ocean. The shoreline faces broadly west, so it works best on swell arriving from the western quadrant, anywhere from northwest through west to southwest, which the Bay of Biscay delivers reliably through the cooler months.

Nearly every break here is a beach break over sand, and that shapes how you plan a session. Sandbars shift with the seasons and storms, so peaks move and the same stretch can look completely different week to week. That variability is part of the appeal: with the right bank and the right swell, these beaches produce fast, punchy waves, and when the sand is disorganized you simply move along the coast until you find a working peak.

The region spreads across several towns worth knowing. Lège-Cap-Ferret anchors the southern end near the mouth of Arcachon Bay and holds the most options, while Carcans, Le Porge, Soulac-sur-Mer and Grayan-et-l'Hôpital string northward up the Médoc coast. Notable spots include Lacanau, Le Porge and Le Truc Vert, and other well-known peaks such as Cap Ferret, Carcans and Hourtin round out the choices. Lacanau in particular is one of the best-known surf towns in the area and a long-running fixture on the French competition calendar.

For clean conditions, look for an easterly offshore wind, which grooms the beaches and holds the faces open; a few spots also come good on a southeast or west wind depending on their orientation. Tides are forgiving across most of the coast, with peaks that can work through low, mid and high water, though the exact window depends on the sandbar in front of you. A small swell of around a foot is enough to get many beaches breaking, and they stay rideable up to shoulder-to-overhead and a bit beyond before the bigger banks start to close out.

Most of the surf spots in Gironde suit intermediate surfers who are comfortable with beach-break paddle-outs, shifting peaks and the occasional stronger current between banks. There is a beginner-friendly option in the mix, but on a bigger, better-organized swell these beaches reward confident surfers more than first-timers. Autumn and winter tend to bring the most consistent groundswell, while lighter summer conditions run softer and suit longboards and fun-oriented boards.

If you are planning a trip, treat the whole coastline as one connected zone: check the swell direction and wind first, then pick a beach and a bank rather than fixating on a single spot. The reward for that flexibility is a stretch of sand-bottom Atlantic beach breaks that can deliver quality waves for anyone willing to walk the sand and read the banks.
