Surfing in New Jersey

New Jersey is an east-facing stretch of the Atlantic where sandy beach breaks and jetties make up nearly all of the surf, working best when easterly to southeasterly swell lines up with offshore wind. The coastline runs north to south, so most breaks want swell from the east through the southeast and clean up when the wind blows from the west or northwest.

The variety here is spread across barrier-island towns rather than concentrated in one hub. Ocean City has the widest range of spots, followed by Cape May at the southern tip and Atlantic City and Brigantine along the central shore. Northern zones around Bay Head and Seaside Heights hold some of the region's better-known waves, while further south you'll find setups like States Avenue. For a feel of the open coast, Island Beach State Park and Lavallette show the kind of long beach-break stretches that define much of the shoreline.

Most of the surf spots in New Jersey are sand-bottom beach breaks, with jetty setups adding shape and the occasional peak that holds a little longer. That makes it an approachable coast for a range of abilities: plenty of intermediate peaks, a strong showing of beginner-friendly beaches, and a handful of heavier spots for experienced surfers when the swell fills in. Beginner-friendly picks include Seaside Heights/Casino Pier and the mellow beach peaks around it.

For the forecast, think easterly. Swell from the east, east-southeast, and southeast feeds the most spots, with south and northeast angles lighting up fewer breaks. Offshore wind comes from the west and northwest, so a west-to-northwest airflow behind a passing low is the classic clean-up. Mid tide is the most reliable window across the coast, with many spots also holding on lower water, while high tide suits fewer breaks. Most beaches start breaking around 2 ft and cap out in the overhead range, roughly 8 to 10 ft, before the bigger sandbars wash through.

Autumn and winter are the standout seasons, when Atlantic lows and the tail of hurricane season push more frequent swell into the region. The water turns cold, so a proper wetsuit matters, but the trade-off is the year's cleanest and most consistent surf. Boards run the full range, from shortboards and fish on punchy days to longboards and funboards when the waves go soft, which fits the mix of small-day beach breaks and the occasional bigger swell.
