Surfing in New South Wales

New South Wales stretches down Australia's east-facing coast, a long run of beaches, points and reefs that pull consistent swell from the east and southeast off the Tasman Sea. With spots spread across nearly two hundred setups, from the subtropical points around Byron Bay in the north through Coffs Harbour and Newcastle down to the beaches and reefs around Cronulla in Sydney's south, plus the remote reefs of Lord Howe Island, it is one of the most varied stretches of coast in the country for finding a wave.

Most breaks face into swell arriving from the east through southeast, with east-northeast and northeast angles filling in on the right systems and south swell adding size and punch to the more exposed setups. Offshore winds come off the land from the western quarter, so light northwest, west or southwest conditions clean up the surf across most of the region, and the early session before the sea breeze kicks in is usually the call. The coast works through most of the tide, though many sand banks and river mouths come alive around low to mid, while the reefs and points tend to favour mid tide.

Beach breaks make up the bulk of the coast, sit over sand, and can break on swell as small as a foot, which keeps them manageable and makes them where most learning happens. Beginner-friendly picks include Treachery, Catherine Hill Bay and Curl Curl. Reefs and points are the step up: they generally want more swell in the water, hold size better, and reward stronger surfers, with the points often lighting up under a southwest wind. Notable spots include Treachery, Avalon and Avoca Beach, while classic setups such as The Farm, Angourie and Arrawarra show the range from open beach bank to long-walling point.

For surfing in New South Wales, the cleanest days line up when a solid easterly or southerly swell meets a light offshore wind. The coast draws winter groundswell from southern lows and pulses of tropical swell through the warmer months, so there is nearly always something running somewhere along the coast. Beginners have plenty of forgiving sand-bottom options close to the main towns, while experienced surfers can chase the reefs and points once the swell builds and the wind swings offshore.
