Surfing in California

California is one of the world's most varied surf coastlines, a largely west- and southwest-facing shore that pulls in consistent Pacific swell and comes alive from autumn into winter. The coast runs from the cool, powerful points of the north down to the mellower, sun-soaked beaches of the south, and that spread gives you an enormous range of setups within a few hours' drive.

Most of the surf here breaks over beaches, which make up the bulk of the spots, backed by a deep supply of reefs and a smaller but prized set of points. Sandy bottoms dominate, while reef ledges and boulder points add the higher-performance waves. San Diego anchors the south with the widest concentration of options, followed by Encinitas along the same North County stretch, while Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and Malibu spread the choices up the coast toward the central and northern zones.

The swell window is broad but leans hard toward the west and southwest, with west-northwest winter groundswell and warmer-season south swell both finding takers. Clean conditions come mostly on easterly to northeasterly winds, so early mornings before the sea breeze fills in tend to be the glassiest. Many spots work across most of the tide, with mid tide the most reliable window and low tide opening up plenty more. Autumn is the standout season, combining lingering warmth with the first of the bigger swells, and winter keeps the north and the reefs firing.

There is plenty here for every level. Intermediate-friendly waves are the most common, expert-only reefs and points supply the heavier days, and a solid share of forgiving beach breaks make it a genuine place to learn. Beginner-friendly picks include San Clemente State Park, Cowells, and Doheny State Beach, all gentle, sandy, and easy to read. For a step up, notable spots include Rincon Point, Steamer Lane – The Slot, and Scott Creek, which reward timing and a little local knowledge. Other well-known California surf spots worth orienting around include Big Rock, Cardiff Reef, and Dillon Beach.

Board choice reflects the variety: shortboards suit the punchier beach and reef days, while funboards, fish, and longboards shine on the softer, longer-period waves that roll through the points and mellow beaches. Most days sit in a manageable size, roughly waist-to-overhead, with the reefs and points holding the larger swells when they arrive. Pack a wetsuit year-round, since the Pacific stays cool even in summer, and let the wind and tide decide which zone you point the car toward.
